Take Action

Your voice matters. Here are concrete ways you can make a difference in legislative advocacy.

Contact Your Legislator

One of the most effective things you can do is contact your state representative and senator directly. Legislators pay attention when they hear from constituents.

  • Find your legislator: leg.colorado.gov/find-my-legislator
  • Be personal: Share your story in your own words — personal stories are more powerful than form letters
  • Be specific: Reference the bill number and explain how it affects you or your family
  • Be respectful: A courteous, factual approach is always more effective
  • Follow up: If you don’t receive a response, follow up with a phone call

Attend Committee Hearings

When bills are in committee, your physical presence makes a difference. Here’s how to participate:

  • Check the Colorado General Assembly committee schedule for hearing dates
  • Arrive early — popular hearings fill up quickly
  • Sign up to testify if the committee allows public testimony
  • Even if you don’t testify, being counted in the room matters
  • Dress professionally and be prepared to wait

Submit Written Testimony

If you cannot attend in person, written testimony is another powerful tool:

  • Address your testimony to the committee chair
  • Reference the specific bill number
  • Keep it concise — one page is ideal
  • Include factual information, personal experience, and/or research
  • Submit before the hearing date when possible
