Meet Your Legislator

In-person meetings with your state legislators are one of the most effective forms of advocacy. This guide will help you prepare for and make the most of those conversations.

Find Your Legislator

Every Coloradan has a State Representative and a State Senator. To find yours:

You can also contact the Colorado General Assembly at 303-866-2904 for assistance.

Requesting a Meeting

  • Call or email the legislator’s office to request a meeting. Identify yourself as a constituent.
  • Be flexible on scheduling — legislators have demanding schedules, especially during session.
  • State your topic: Briefly explain what you’d like to discuss so the legislator can prepare.
  • Bring a small group if possible — 2 to 4 people is ideal. Include a mix of perspectives (registrant, family member, advocate).

During the Meeting

  • Be punctual and professional: Dress appropriately and arrive on time.
  • Introduce yourselves: Briefly explain who you are and your connection to the issue.
  • Lead with your story: Personal stories are the most powerful advocacy tool. Share how registry laws affect you or your family.
  • Have a clear ask: Know specifically what you want the legislator to do (support/oppose a bill, attend a briefing, etc.).
  • Bring a one-pager: Leave behind a brief fact sheet that summarizes your position and key data points.
  • Listen: Ask the legislator’s position and listen respectfully, even if you disagree.
  • Thank them: Thank the legislator for their time regardless of their position.

After the Meeting

  • Send a thank-you email within 24 hours reiterating your key points
  • Follow up on any commitments or questions that arose during the meeting
  • Report back to AFC about the meeting so we can track legislator positions and follow up as needed
